The word photography derives from the Greek “to draw with light.” I make these photograms without a camera or negative by drawing with flashlights, painting with chemicals and light masking with everyday objects.
The black and white silver gelatin process is fluid and visible so that I can build and modify the image throughout the exposure and development process, using timing and movement collaboratively to make interactive images. Creating a chromogenic photogram demands a fundamentally different approach. The color darkroom is pitch black. The printing process becomes a kind of meditation, a centering and feeling around in the dark for paper and props. I work with the imagined color by painting with a palate of flashlights. Movement and timing is sensed and felt. Not knowing is its own reward.
